Building a Hedgehog Highway with Wildzy
Start at the fence, not the hedgehog house
A hedgehog garden usually fails at the boundary, not in the flowerbed. A solid garden fence turns a useful habitat into an island, while a single 13 cm by 13 cm gap gives a hedgehog a route through without letting most pets follow. Hedgehogs can travel 1–2 km in a night, so access matters more than the size of the plot. The takeaway is to plan the gap before buying a house, because shelter is useless if the animal cannot reach it.
Record the route with wildzy
A route audit is quicker when the facts are written down. wildzy can hold the details that matter on a garden scale: gap position, nearest cover, water features, and any drop over 30 cm. Check the line at dusk, when hedgehogs are active, and add a ramp or barrier where the route meets a pond or basement light well. The record also helps another household repeat the same gap on the adjoining fence.
Build a leaf-and-log corner for winter
Hedgehogs need dry, undisturbed cover from November to March. A leaf pile about 1 m wide, mixed with small logs and placed against a quiet wall, holds warmth better than a bare hedgehog house on open lawn. Put a shallow water dish nearby, but avoid bread and milk; both cause digestive problems. Keep slug pellets out of the corner, because a hedgehog can eat poisoned slugs. The result is a shelter that stays usable when the first frost arrives.
Plant low cover instead of tidy edges
A mown lawn offers little protection from badgers, dogs, or daytime disturbance. A narrow border of native plants—hawthorn, honeysuckle, or lady’s bedstraw—gives hedgehogs cover within a few metres of the gap. Leave seed heads and fallen leaves through winter, and cut back stems in late spring rather than autumn. This keeps the route connected without turning the garden into an unmanaged thicket.
Check the gap monthly
A hedgehog highway closes quietly. Strimmers cut back vegetation, new fence panels block gaps, and garden waste can seal a route within a season. A monthly two-minute check—gap clear, water clean, leaf pile undisturbed—is enough for most gardens. Use wildzy to log the date and any sightings; repeated records show whether the corner is working as a route or only as a one-off shelter.
